In recent weeks, we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in an intensive Timber Framing course in Scotland, taught by Thomson Timber, a leader in the field of traditional carpentry and timber construction. It was an experience that focused on the essentials: wood, dedication, culture, and the inspiring camaraderie among people who value craftsmanship.

What we have learned
During the course, he explored ancient techniques for building with softwood (green timber), learned the principles of different structural framing methods, such as post-and-beam and mill rule, cutting and joining wood, marking joints and assembling structures. Thomson Timber These are techniques that combine form and function, tradition and sustainability — working with fresh wood, respecting its natural qualities.
Wood as a bridge between cultures
More than just techniques, these were days of sharing. Wood has this special power: it connects hands, languages and worldviews. Working side by side with other students and masters, each with their own culture, showed how craftsmanship can be a universal language — when we are willing to learn, listen and respect.
Philosophy and renewal
At Atelier Encaixe, we have always believed that craftsmanship is vital, not only for aesthetics or decoration, but as a responsible way of life. Learning new ways to structure wood, applying more conscious methods, understanding the cycles of raw materials — all of this reinforces our commitment to sustainability, to the use of natural materials, and to respecting the time that each piece requires.
These weeks of classes reinforced something we have always felt: everything becomes better when we are open to learning, curious to experiment, humble enough to recognise that there is always something new to learn. It is this openness that transforms a workshop, brings artisans together, creates FRIENDSHIPS and enriches both the inside and the outside.
